We work to minimise waste generation across all of our communities, with waste management practices incorporated into our operations – and a focus on diverting waste from landfill where practicable.
In new developments, our Sustainable Development Guidelines include requirements for waste management planning to reduce construction waste.
Our approach focuses on improving data capture, increasing recycling and diversion rates, and ultimately reducing waste generation at source.
While total waste volume has grown due to portfolio expansion and higher occupancy, recycled tonnage rose 13% in FY25, while waste to landfill decreased.
Several factors contributed to this progress:
- Expanded recycling bins and improved resident education
- On-site mulching of green waste by landscaping contractors for garden reuse
- Standardised waste service contracts across more sites ensuring consistent recycling services
- Solutions found for regional parks lacking local recycling infrastructure, and
- Waste walls at a number of communities offering broader recycling options, including batteries.
Looking ahead, we continue to explore opportunities to improve waste outcomes as part of our broader sustainability program. We remain committed to increasing diversion towards 30%, continuing to invest in education, on-site processing (such as composting), and exploring waste-to-energy options for non-recyclable materials.
